we're having some family and friends over to celebrate the day in style. and that style is with cupcakes, beverages, ice cream and hot dogs (or veggie dogs for the vegetarian/vegan crowds and brats for those of us who know better!). to prepare for this, we did some serious yard work saturday. my dad took the dude for the day and stacky and i were able to get some things done. the sun stayed hidden and there was some sprinkling (which was great except when i went to install the new porch light...no funny dances from me!) so it kept the heat in line with personal tolerances.
we even got to hit REI for helmets. that was fun. i explained to the salesdude that the wife and i were raised in the 70's. that means that anyone who wears a helmet is a nerd. how do we get one that fits, etc. he was really helpful and we got us some brainbuckets. we do have to wear them in state parks and we want to model good behavior for the dude. besides, he gets so stoked over his that it's hard not to want one for myself. it was good fun.
the only downer of saturday was that the dude didn't nap enough with grandpa. he needs to spend more time over at their place so he'll be more comfortable. we'll work on that. but damn, i paid for it sunday. stacky went out to shop for party stuff and housewares and i hung out with the dude. he was in a really, really foul mood. he needed to sleep, but refused. it really does wear on a man's patience. we finished sunday with some homemade pizza and opening presents with stacky's parents (her mom will be out of town on his actual birthday). the gift of the day was a big ass bag of duplos! i'll have a million holes in my feet in no time! he really did enjoy them and i think we're in for a whole new era of creative play. the kid is nuts.
to rewind a bit, i did get my djembe. and it is awesome. there's a lot of tone in that bad boy and i really enjoy playing at it. i pretend to play a lot of instruments and i have a helluva lot of fun. the dude enjoys the drum too. i should really get him one for his birthday so we can jam. he was beating on a cardboard box last night and looking so proud. but don't worry, i'll get him started on a proper instrument soon enough. can't have more percussionists in the family than we already do. barbarians!
plans. we're planning our garden. it's really f'd up that we can plant stuff in the fall here. i'm still not over the climate. but there's gonna be some hella sweet squash and other tasty treats coming up soon. i hope i don't have to sacrifice a vacation day to putting in the garden, but i'll do what i must! back to the land, yo!
more recording tonight. i've been struggling with a tune for more than 6 weeks now and i finally got to the root of the problem. it'll be wrapped up before thursday, methinks. it's nice to know what needs to be done...it makes the doing far simpler.
no cycling this weekend. sigh. the weather was perfect for it. the dude was not. 'tis the way of things.
i'm sure that i had more to say, but i'm running low on time. lots to do. too much, in fact.
